He later became the executive producer of the 1973 horror film The Exorcist. He wrote, directed, co-produced and starred in the film Roar (1981), which also featured his then-wife Tippi Hedren, stepdaughter Melanie Griffith, and his sons, John and Jerry, from a previous marriage to Jaye Joseph. Roar was an accident-ridden film that featured tigers and lions. The film took eleven years and $17 million to make, and brought in only $2 million worldwide. He passed away at age of 79, after a battle with brain cancer.
