Young parents Dave and Rebecca end up having to take care of Dave's parents, who have mishandled their finances and need help to pay down a sizable debt.
Without involving Rebecca, Dave makes questionable choices when trying to get Asher into a gifted program. Stew starts driving for a ride-share to make some extra cash. After picking up Joanna, he helps her deal with her complicated love life.
After Rebecca tells Dave she carries the emotional labor, aka the "mental load" of the family, he tries to prove otherwise by having her take care of just Deb and Stew for a few days. They both realize they've bit off more than they can chew, especially when Dave enlists his mom to help with Rebecca's mental load.
Joanna has a new girlfriend who doesn't like to gossip. This forces the family to take a long, hard look at the way they communicate, because they love hot gossip.
Dave and Rebecca worry that with grandparents living in the house, their kids are too spoiled. When Asher loses his first tooth, Deb and Stew interfere with the tooth fairy and prove Dave and Rebecca right. Joanna lies about being an involved aunt.
Deb's big brother Art is coming to town. A trickle-down of each family member pawning off favors onto each other ensues.
After agreeing to buy a minivan, Dave goes back on his word to Rebecca.
Dave and Rebecca have 24 hours without their kids and the clock is ticking, but they keep being disappointed by their options.
After Debbie's meddling, Dave and Rebecca wonder if their sex life is more ebbing than flowing.
After realizing Debbie and Stew are forcing the neighbors to socialize, Dave and Rebecca try to convince them to keep to themselves, insisting neighbors should just be neighbors.
Debbie decides to become a certified life coach to help her and Stew get out of debt and immediately make waves in Dave and Rebecca's lives. Stew rejects Joanna's help while trying to come up with a great new as-seen-on-TV product.
After Deb's Aunt Judith dies, she passes the torch of hosting shiva to Rebecca and Dave. They take this as an opportunity to put a modern spin on old traditions, which makes Debbie regret passing the torch to begin with. At the shiva, Joanna is worried she too will die alone, which forces her to look for love in unlikely places and people.
